Varathane vs Minwax are both best according to their use purpose. Both come at very affordable prices and both work very effectively.

But the main question is which is best and which you will choose for your wood?

Let me know it.

Varathane Vs Minwax

Varathane and Minwax are both a good wood stain brand and both work very effectively. Both wood stains come in an affordable price range.

If you want water-resistant polyurethanes and a smooth finish look then varathane is the best option for you. On the other hand, if you want to get a wood stain at a very affordable price then Minwax is the ideal solution for you.

Always keep in mind that, don’t judge these two wood stains by comparing only their price point. Because it depends on several factors what’s your need, what’s your price, how much quantity, coating options, and many more.

Now let’s discuss it briefly.

Varathane

Varathane is now part of the Rust-Oleum company Varathane has manufactured wood stain products since 1958 and Varathane sells their products internationally. Varathane manufactures wood stains for both interior and exterior woods.

Basically, Varathane is well popular for its finishes and for its quick drying options. If you want a wood stain that provides you the best shine and finishes with water-resistant polyurethanes and also a quick drying feature this one is a perfect solution for you.

On the other hand, Varathane is also a good solution for other wood products such as furniture tables, wood chairs, wood windows, doors, and other wood surfaces. It will help the wood products become water resistant and protect them from several damages.

One of the best features is that Varathane is available for both water-based and oil-based purposes. If we talk about the oil-based products of Varathane then it is well popular for their long-lasting shine and for its durability.

On the other hand, Varathane’s water-based products are popular for their fast drying and its products are suitable for all types of wood materials and give you a shiny look.

Additionally, Varathane also provides you with a wood conditioner which helps to prevent blotching and wood graining issues.

Comparison Between Varathane Vs Minwax

Some people are saying Varathan is durable and some people say Minwax is durable according to their preference. But according to my opinion and my experience both are works equal and the results are tie. Because both products work very effectively and provide you long lifespan, if we take care of your wood properly then it will provide you with more lifespan.

The main difference between Varathane and Minwax is, according to coating, Varathane is best as compared to Minwax. Varathane needs only one coat and Minwax needs 2 to 3 times coating if you want a proper shine. The reason is that Minwax is not so much thik as compared to Varathane.

Well if we talk about toxicity, then both come with the same toxicity. We would recommend you use the surface where you apply the Varathane or Minwax after full drying.

If we discuss the price between these two products, then varathane is a little bit expensive as compared to Minwax. Varathane provides you thick layer and it does not need to apply multiple coats as compared to Minwax.

How Long Will Varathane Last?

Varathane Vs Minwax

Well, it depends on your usage. Varathane will last up to one year. On the other hand, it also depends on several factors including how you will use that product, for which purpose you use the product like for interior use or for exterior use purpose, and the environment also depends.

If you properly take care of that product then it will go more than 1 year because this wood stain is very thick it will last very long.

How Long Will Minwax Last?

Varathane Vs Minwax

Well, minwax will last a minimum of 3 to 4 months and it also depends on several factors including the atmosphere, environment, your usage, and where you apply the minwax such as for exterior use or for interior use.

On the other hand, you will apply multiple time coats for the best shining and for finishing. Because Minwax is a little bit thinner as compared to varathane.

Can you apply Water-based Varathane over oil-based Varathane?

Yes of course. You will easily apply water-based varathane over oil-based varathane. However, you will need to consider some factors before applying the water-based varathane over oil-based varathane.

When you apply the oil-based Varathane to a wood surface must wait a minimum of 1-2 days for fully drying the wood. After that, you will easily apply the water-based varathane.

On the other hand, Don’t apply too many coats over the oil-based varathane. We would recommend that before applying a coat on a wood surface must use sandpaper so that unnecessary dust and other particles are removed.

Can You Apply Varathane Over Minwax?

The short answer is yes. You will easily apply the Varathane over Minwax and it will also provide you best results. Even I also applied it many times.

Because Minwax is a little bit thinner and needs to be applied multiple times on a wood surface, because of this reason, I will apply the Varathane coat over the Minwax.

These are the processes which I follow:

  1. First of all, I use sandpaper on my wooden chair and gently scrub it.
  2. Then I apply the Minwax’s first coat, then after some time again, I apply the second coat.
  3. But still, it is not so much thicker which I except.
  4. Then I leave the wood chair for 2 days for full drying, because it is very important for the wood stains for drying.
  5. After passing 2 days I apply the Coat over the Minwax and I get a very thick layer and shine which I exactly except from.

So, this is the result that I get from applying varathane over minwax. You will also apply it but keep in mind that you will need to leave the wood surface a minimum of 1-2 days for proper drying.
